Had a bad noise in my front wheel. (wheels are Mavic-317)
As i was riding, i'd hear a "clang" with every rotation.
When i got home, i took the wheel off the bike and spun it while holding the skewer...and again..."clang" with every full rotation.
So, i'm thinking must be the hub. Nope.
I put my ear close to the rim and the noise was coming from the rim.
AHA! So i took the tire and tube off and no more noises.
Put the tube and tire back on, pumped it up to 40lbs, and "clang", "clang" again. WTF?! i said to myself.
Took the tire and tube off again...and again...every time the noise would go away with the tire and tube out.
I gave up and took it to my biketech guru.
He said (before looking at it, just from my description): "I know exactly what that is.".
I handed him the wheel and he said: "Take the tire and tube off."
I said: "But it won't do it with tire and tube out!".
He replied: "JUST DO IT!"
After removing tire and tube, i handed it to him.
He drilled 2 small holes where there were these '"dimples" in the metalwork. He told me: "There's a piece of flat metal inside the rim's seam and it's tacked to the rim with these 2 dimples." He proceded to pour crazyglue into the holes that he made. We chatted while waiting for it to dry.
I put the tire and tube back on, pumped it up and VOILA..no more noises !!
Anyone ever hear of such a thing??
I never knew there was a "secret piece of metal lurking inside/between the layers of my rims.
I wonder if other wheels have this inside.
Anyone??
