i think they are catching on to a very specific group of riders.  if you love riding on long island then a 29er is prob a good choice for you.  but for me i wanna wheely over every root and rock in the trail then i think the bike control you get from a standard 26 is the way to go.  GF talks about grace and that is all good and i respect him very much especially after watching that video.  but i prefer a little more adventure on the trails and i like having to work for my lines.  26ers for life!!
