What do ya think???
« on: December 26, 2008, 11:44:56 AM »
Ok here is the scenero
I have done extensive research on 2 bikes and would like your opinions on both.
The bikes are

Ibex Ignition Pro and the Motobecane Fantom DS Comp

Now I would like what you think about either bike as I am probably going to purchase one of these bikes.

Personally I'd go with the Ibex... Sram over Shimano Drive train I feel is always a good thing. But that is as much because I wrench 90% my own stuff.  Also the Ibex has an External bearing crank set over the internal bearing set on the Motobecane. (though it is the famous FireX set that the bolt come out on regularly if not cranked to spec torque at install)

Also it looks like the stand over height is better on the Ibex.

Are you buying locally or Online?

so you'll be wrenching it?  think about just "building" a bike.. could come out about the same $$$ with a better bike.. there are LOTS of deals right now on last yrs Sram and Shimano part ( which is what you're getting on a pre assembled bike) and can pick and choose parts...

just a thought

I would buy either bike complete and most of the bikes today are about 90% assembled I think I can handle that.

Go with the Ibex...  :)  you'll definatly be better off with Sram down the road with ADJ's.. Shimano is very "touchy" to get cables and such set correctly....

well, I have a mixed bag of thought... I love buying local because of the service... but I actually enjoy doing the wrenching myself.... :-\  If you aren't planning on or enjoy doing the regular services then you're going to be much better off buying local.... the extra $$$$ you'll save in the first 6 months.

Remember that you need to adj all cables, tighten bolts, check things a few times during the first few months/rides... if you don't have torque wrenches, Alllen wrenches and other tools.. buy at a shop... you'll enjoy the ride more!!

Buttttt,,,,.... if you're like me you have, or don't mind buying the tools, enjoy the time working on the bike. then get online!  I do reccomend supporting local shop... I often go there and look around and ALWAYS leave with something even if it's a couple CO2 's a tire patch kit, or a cable... got to keep them going, not just for myself but to have them there and functioning for those people who don't wrench and I want to ride with!! ;D

Always good to keep your options open. I agree with supporting your local shop but you can't be held hostage to that. There's nothing wrong with shopping online.

My 2 cents: buy the bike that fits best.  Are you long in the legs or torso, how's your flexibility, what type of trails do you ride, what's your riding technique and experience?  All these are issues in fit, and when I say "fit," I don't mean buying the right size, but getting a bike from a manufacturer that uses the right proportions for you.

So, unless you have a lot of experience reading geometry charts and know what you need (don't trust charts that size you to a bike by height if you care how it works for you), you'll want to find a good bike shop with a knowledgeable staff that will actually watch you ride various bikes and help you figure out what brand's geometry fits you best.  This is easily worth an extra $100 vs. having a bike that doesn't handle well under you.
